SFS buying guide to different types of metal roof & panel clips

Roof clips, also known as cleats, act as anchors to which builders can attach metal panels to substrates using accompanying screws. They are a key component of concealed fastening systems which deliver desirably streamlined aesthetics and weathertightness, even for low-slope roofs. The clips themselves accommodate weight distribution and thermal movement without jeopardizing the integrity of the installation, enabling the installation of longer panels

Metal roof clips come in different designs and various metals, such as aluminum or copper. However, SFS commonly favors galvanized and stainless steel for their strength and resistance to corrosive damage.

Utilize this buying guide to determine which type of metal clips will accommodate the unique properties of your upcoming roofing or siding project.

Float panel clips (also known as a two-piece)

The defining difference between float clip and its fixed counterpart is that it elevates that attached panel off the substrate. This enables thermal expansion and contractions in conjunction with the metal panel; maximum movement is determined by the part’s specific slide capability built into the base-and-tab design element. This is particularly helpful in geographies that experience large fluctuations in weather and in open framing applications to create the necessary space for insulation. Builders often utilize float clips with longer panels, as they are more likely to experience thermal movement. Keep in mind, the added space will mean that builders will need to modify the flashing trim accordingly.

Fixed clips

Unlike floating designs, a fixed clip does not expand or contract. This makes it ideal to pair with shorter panels, as lack of length makes them less likely to experience thermal movement. Fixed clips accommodate mechanically seamed panel and snap-lock systems in which panels move independently of one another. It’s worth noting that fixed clips are more economical than float clips.

Snaplock clips

Employ standing seam panel clips when installing snap-lock panels without mechanical seaming. Like floating clips, snaplock types facilitate thermal fluctuations.

Butterfly base & tab clips

Butterfly clips are similar to floating clips in that they accommodate thermal movement dictated by the width of the “slide” element. However, This type of float clip requires field assembly, which can be a more time-consuming application.

Other considerations when choosing the right type of metal clip

Manufacturer guidelines: First and foremost, consult with the panel manufacturer’s guidelines about specific types of roof clips that are compatible. SFS data sheets also list popular brands and panels our clips complement.

Panel seam: While mechanically seamed panels enable you to choose from multiple kinds of roof clips (fixed vs. float), snap-lock systems prohibit you from utilizing float clips.

Panel length: The degree to which substrates are subject to thermal expansion depends on their length and material type. If you will install panels that exceed 30-feet, greatly consider float clips.

Panel materials: The type of metal utilized depends on the environment and the substrate material, as dissimilar metals could spur corrosion (which also holds true for the attaching fasteners). SFS offers many of our roof and panel clips in both G-90 galvanized and 304 stainless steel.

Insulation thickness: The height of the applied insulation helps determine the needed roof clip height. Heights can vary from 1” to 4.37”, depending on the specific type.

Environmental factors: Do temperatures dramatically swing? This can cause the panel’s metal to expand and contract, meaning that your choice of roof clip will need to account for such changes without sacrificing the security of the installation or causing cracking. As alluded to above, this will also influence your choice of metal.

Consult with SFS or the panel manufacturer to choose the optimal type of metal clip
